Hello friends!

Last week, we discussed a tried-and-true method for avoiding headaches after you move in. The big idea is to add blocking in the walls before drywall is applied so that you can hang items easily without having to find a stud.

Red Flags When Hiring a Contractor ๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ

Hiring is one of the most stressful parts of the home construction process, and that's especially true when money is tight and the market is competitive. You're not just hiring a builder, you're establishing a long term relationship that will have to survive disagreements, misunderstandings, and more.

A quote from a contractor friend stuck with me. He said, "You only have to buy quality once." His point is that cheap products are cheap for a reason. You have a choice: buy quality once, or cheap multiple times. Over time, quality often wins.

Hiring people is more complicated, but the same idea applies in many cases. The cheapest contractor may be cheap for a reason. Recently, I came across a post in the Construction forum on Reddit, which often has real-world perspectives from builders.

The quote below is from user wiscogamer (lightly edited for readability). Every situation is different and this is just one data point from someone who chose to share.

I'm seeing lots of posts from home owners. The majority of your problems could be fixed by just not hiring the cheapest guy and also seeking out multiple quotes. Do a small amount of research like google reviews and ask if there are any past customers you could talk to. Any good contractor will be able to call a couple of people heโ€™s worked for and they will say, sure, come on over.
โ€‹
I mean one bad review is not bad. Every company thatโ€™s been in business long enough has had the one guy you canโ€™t make happy. But overall there should be a trail of more happy people than angry people.
โ€‹
I know construction costs and remodeling can be expensive but the fact is, what we do is not easy. If the guy coming to your house is the cheapest, doesnโ€™t have a contract, has a pickup thatโ€™s rusted out and dresses like they are homeless, asks for more than the materials cost up front... these are all red flags. Itโ€™s no different than looking up the car or tv you want to buy. A little research goes a long way, people.
โ€‹
Sorry if this sounds like a rant but Iโ€™m just hoping some home owners read this and take the advice. Those of us in the trades can spot a hack a mile away and know really quickly if we should be working with them.

I hope this is helpful. Last year, I shared quotes from the same forum that answers the question: Who pays for a redo?โ€‹

That's what I have for now. I'll be in touch soon with a sweet offer on Build Livable courses. Stay tuned!
