Hello friends!

Last week, I shared links to home inspectors who are sharing their work (and lessons) online. This week, we'll look at how metal roofs are fabricated on-site.

Rolling Out Metal Roofs

We've all seen standing seam metal roofs. They are one of the most durable roofing options and one that can resist burning when embers fall from a forest fire. We chose a metal roof for our home, in part, because the roof is too flat many other materials.

In one section, our roof is 60' long and the roofer said he wanted to install roof panels that go the entire length. This got me thinking: how do they deliver 60' roof panels? It turns out, the panels are fabricated on-site.

The process is fascinating. The metal is delivered in large, heavy spools and then formed and cut on-site in a process called β€œroll forming”. It’s like a giant mechanical tape dispenser:

The flat metal is fed into a machine that forms it into the standing seam shape. A similar process is used for gutters.

The machine can form very long pieces of metal. Here's a 60' piece from our project.

The panels were all stacked nicely and ready for installation.

The question becomes: how do you get the long panels onto the roof? The answer: very carefully. The process involves attaching 2X4s to the panels to make them more rigid and then pulling them up, one at a time. On some projects, the forming machine is placed on the roof so the panels are created in place.
